MARKET REPORT
WEEK OF: 08/13/07

WEATHER
Salinas, CA; daytime highs are expected into the mid 80's and overnight lows are expected to go down to the lower 70's. Oxnard, CA; daytime highs are expected in the mid 80's with overnight lows going to the upper 60's. There are no significant amounts of rain expected into next week.

DEMAND
Sales across the country are lower due to the heat wave affecting most of the country.

TRANSPORTATION
Transportation availability is tighter due to the heavier summer shipping season, look for rates to maintain there level, this is due only to lower fuel rates, which is helping to moderate the market. The price of crude oil per barrel fell as of August 8th to $72.15 a barrel.

ICEBERG AND LEAF LETTUCE
Iceberg lettuce supplies are maintaining average level with head sizing starting to correct itself with better averages across the board. Look for supplies to continue due to warmer than average temperatures in the main California growing areas. Leaf lettuces are slightly increasing though due to some shippers skipping over fields that have been affected by heat.

CAULIFLOWER AND BROCCOLI
Broccoli supplies are getting short due to warm temps bringing on product quicker than needed. The cauliflower market is also on the move up with supplies maintaining but many chain stores are going into summer ads.

CELERY
The western celery market is stable and Michigan has now started to ship product. Michigan product has been quite nice and is at a lower market level than California. Look for Canada to start harvesting supplies in a light way going into late next week.

STRAWBERRIES
The Strawberry market is increasing slightly due to some main shippers having some quality issues in the fruit due to warmer than normal temperatures. Look for the situation to go higher by the months end.

ONIONS
The onion market is slipping slightly due to Canadian onions now coming into the picture with many other areas still into good supplies (New Mexico, California and Colorado). Quality should be nice out of most areas with dry, warm weather affecting most of the country.

RUSSETS
Russet supplies are good across the board, from Idaho and Washington all the way to Wisconsin. Carton demand is steady and poly bale demand seems to continue to be slow. Quality has been nice out of storage from all areas and no major market changes are expected.

ORANGES
California shippers are experiencing heavy demand on size 88 count and smaller and are having a difficult time keeping up. Volume on 88 counts and smaller continues to slowly decline which is adding to the problem. Quality has been very nice and Valencia oranges are now the main variety available. The market is expected to remain strong due to Florida having finished up with fresh product.

LEMONS
Lemon storage supplies are short and prices reflect the market. There are some off shore supplies coming in from Spain but not enough to really affect the market.

MELONS
With product now coming almost exclusively from the Westside markets are moderate and quality should be very nice coming out of this premium-growing region.

GRAPES
The Coachella Valley in California is coming into normal production and Mexico is still crossing product daily. Supplies are improving and market prices are just showing signs of decrease. Quality has been nice overall across the board and the three main colors are all available. Red Globe grapes have come to an end for offshore suppliers, but not a minute too soon with quality progressively slipping.

TOMATO
The tomato market is finally showing signs of increase due to shippers finally getting a handle on supplies that were brought on heavy the last few weeks due to heat. California shippers are having a hard time with quality due to heat. The east coast and the mountains is the area to be with better quality and supplies.

PEPPER
The green pepper market is at a very low level with supplies coming out of any of a number of areas. The red pepper market however is increasing with the Bakersfield area of California winding down on supplies.

CUCUMBER
The cucumber market is starting to turn upward with North Carolina supplies coming in a bit short and New Jersey starting to slide between crops. Michigan and Ohio have decent supplies but overall demand is increasing.

LIMES
The lime market is jumping with very light supplies due to the only fruit available being old crop until new fruit becomes available in a couple of weeks. Quality should also slide a bit with a higher maturity on the fruit.

APPLE
Apple supplies are available on all varieties, but prices are strong on most. This is due, as you all know, to a shorter harvest this year and some shippers are ahead of schedule on opening CA rooms. Gold apples seem to be having trouble on quality due to a lot of issues with discoloration and scarring, the other types seem to be holding up fine quality wise.

PEAR
D'Anjou pears are now fully done from storage out of Washington and Packhams are all but done from overseas. Look to California for new crop Bosc pears and summer Bartlett's.

STONE FRUIT
The Reedley area is still pulling in good supplies of all varieties of stone fruit and Washington has showed up to help out with supplies of their own. Markets are moderate and seem to be stable going into next week.

WHITE POTATO
White potatoes are available off the entire east coast of the country. Supplies are good which is helping keep costs down.

CARROTS
The carrot market is finally at a normal market level for the time of year. California is finally running their normal numbers and Canadian carrots are crossing daily with Michigan set to start up next week.
